“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.”
Helen Keller

The Wait
The halls, cold and silent, I wonder, I pace
In this deafening silence I wait
My world inside anticipates your embrace,
as it expands my love and melts my hate
The last few steps of a world I once knew
I walk towards a new unknown
frightened with excitement I watched how you grew
only to give birth in somber solitude, alone
Loneliness witnessed by many eyes, no sight of a smile
Yet still I wait, to smell your hair and touch your face
Cold and silent , I wonder, I pace
I wait, I wait, I wait.
-Talia Egelhof
I wait- was written during my time in hospital waiting for the birth of my daughter. During the Covid crisis the hospital I was admitted to was completely shut down to the outside world, particularly in the gynecology ward. It was a “positive free” zone so it was not highly populated. I gave birth at 42 weeks (post-term), so it was indeed a very long wait.
